7 THINGS HYROX ATHLETES WISH THEY'D KNOWN BEFORE THEIR FIRST RACE

HYROX looks straightforward on paper: run, complete a station, and repeat. But anyone who has raced one knows it feels very different once fatigue starts to build.

We’ve been speaking with HYROX athletes about the things they learned from their first races — the mistakes they made, what caught them out and what they changed next time.

From pacing and sleds to fuelling and recovery, the same lessons keep appearing.

Here are seven worth knowing before you step onto your first HYROX start line.

1. DON’T WIN THE FIRST KILOMETRE

The atmosphere at a HYROX start can make it very easy to go out harder than planned.

But a fast opening kilometre means very little if you’re paying for it later in the race. Several experienced athletes we’ve spoken to highlighted pacing as something they got wrong in their first HYROX.

Have a plan, control the early effort and remember that there’s a lot of work still to come.

2. LEARN TO RUN ON TIRED LEGS

Being able to run well is one thing. Running immediately after pushing a sled, completing burpee broad jumps or finishing a set of lunges is another.

HYROX repeatedly asks you to transition from a functional station back into running. Include some compromised running in your preparation so that feeling isn’t completely new on race day.

You don’t need to turn every run into a HYROX workout. The aim is simply to become familiar with running when your legs aren’t fresh.

3. DON’T MEET THE SLEDS FOR THE FIRST TIME ON RACE DAY

The sled push and pull can be difficult to replicate if you don’t have regular access to HYROX equipment.

If possible, get some experience with a sled before your event. Even occasional access can help you understand your technique, positioning and how the effort affects the run that follows.

Race day shouldn’t be the first time you discover how the movement feels.

4. PRACTISE THE MOVEMENTS THAT COST YOU TIME

Burpee broad jumps, lunges and wall balls can become very different once fatigue builds.

Good technique isn’t just about completing the movement — it’s about completing it efficiently when you’re tired.

Practise the movements you’ll encounter on race day and learn where you can maintain rhythm rather than repeatedly stopping and restarting.

5. KNOW HOW THE RACE WORKS

Not every first-race mistake is about fitness.

Transitions, the Roxzone, knowing where you’re going and understanding the order of the stations can all affect your race.

Familiarise yourself with the format beforehand. Saving yourself unnecessary confusion on race day means you can concentrate on racing.

6. DON’T EXPERIMENT WITH FUELLING ON RACE DAY

Race day isn’t the ideal time to discover that your chosen pre-race meal, drink or nutrition strategy doesn’t agree with you.

Use your training to establish what works for you. Think about what you eat beforehand, your hydration and whether you need anything during the event.

Keep race day familiar rather than introducing something completely new because somebody else recommended it.

7. YOUR RACE DOESN’T FINISH AT THE FINISH LINE

Crossing the finish line might end the race, but it also starts your recovery.

After a demanding event, give some thought to fluids, food, protein and rest rather than leaving recovery until later.

This becomes particularly important if you’re training again soon, racing over a weekend or simply want to get back to normal as quickly as possible.

LEARN FROM THE PEOPLE WHO’VE DONE IT

One of the best things about HYROX is the community surrounding it. Experienced racers have already made many of the mistakes first-timers worry about making.

Ask questions. Learn from other athletes. Test things during training and work out what works for you.

Your first HYROX doesn’t need to be perfect.

It needs to give you something to build on.

TRAIN. RACE. RECOVER.

At Generate, we’re interested in what actually helps people train, perform and recover — not simply what they’re told they should be doing.

Generate Recovery provides plant-based protein in a convenient post-training shake, with protein contributing to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass.
